AngelSense vs. Other GPS Trackers: Here’s What You Need to Know

February 23, 2016

AngelSense includes includes a GPS tracking device and a mobile app.

AngelSense is a comprehensive monitoring platform which also includes a GPS tracking device and a mobile app. AngelSense was specifically designed to cope with the core limitations of personal GPS tracker devices using advanced patent-pending machine learning algorithms.

AngelSense Overcomes Traditional GPS Limitations

GPS technology, though great for the use of car navigation and outdoor activities, isn’t very reliable and tends to result in false alerts when used for personal tracking in a mixed indoor-outdoor environment.

Since GPS technology requires line-of-sight to satellites in order to provide an accurate location, it suffers from significant location errors or from no location indication at all when indoors or near GPS-signal reflecting objects such as tall buildings and bodies of water.

Children with special needs spend much of their time indoors and thus GPS trackers have a high rate of false alerts and location errors. Typically when a child is at school, parents receive multiple false alerts reporting their child has exited school. After experiencing significant stress and confusion, the parent calls the school only to find out that their child has been in class all along.

Using patent-pending machine learning technology, the AngelSense analytics server identifies that the child is in a poor GPS reception area, and validates all the GPS read-outs before generating an alert. This is done to assure you’re only notified about accurate and real location changes.

The following short video shows how AngelSense overcomes GPS technology limitations.

Continuous Monitoring with High Update Frequency

Another major difference between the AngelSense platform and GPS trackers is the analytic server’s ability to continuously monitor the location of your child with a high update frequency of up to every 10 seconds, while also preserving battery life to last for at least 1 full day.

This enables you to monitor detailed travel routes, ensuring that your child was not taken anywhere they are not supposed to be. In addition, if your child is suddenly in an area with no GPS coverage, their route can be tracked till the entry point to that area. With wandering incidents, this enables search teams to know where to begin the search.

Auto Geofencing and Reliable Uknown Place Alert

Reliable early warning alerts are a crucial element in addressing wandering. According to the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children: “as with all critically missing children, time is a vitally important factor in a safe recovery.”

To address this important issue, AngelSense identifies every location that your child spends more than 5 minutes at, and automatically creates a geofence around that location. This way, the platform is able to generate a reliable alert not only when children exit known locations, but also when they arrive at unknown ones. This capability has been proven to save lives.

Late Departure Warning

AngelSense also alerts parents when their child hasn’t left school or any other regularly visited place on time, staying there later than expected. For each location, you can predefine a time of departure. If your child doesn’t leave by that time, you’ll receive an instant text alert. This guarantees that your child will never be left behind.

Runner Mode with First Responder Alert

Once the early warning alert is received, you can use the AngelSense Runner Mode, an advanced tool to help quickly find your child. In this mode, the GPS updates the distance and direction to your child every 10 seconds on a map view. This indication of distance and direction is key for navigating quickly to your child.

This mode also includes the First Responder Alert. With one click, you can notify a predefined group of family, friends and law enforcement officers of your lost child, and grant them immediate access to your child’s real-time location on a live map view. Your child’s location is updated every 10 seconds for the entire search team. To learn more about the First Responder Alert feature, watch this video.

Non-Removable GPS Device

Wearing the GPS device daily is key to keeping your child safe. This must become a habit, just like wearing a car seat-belt. AngelSense offers special accessories for children with sensory sensitivities which they cannot remove. The device can only be removed with a special key which is provided to the parents.

Many children with special needs have high sensory sensitivities, and the standard GPS trackers are designed for children without such sensitivities. They are colorful and cute with different buttons and many are designed as a GPS bracelet. Such design is counter-productive for children with special needs who in many cases demonstrate obsessive behavior and will repeatedly press the buttons and try to take the device off.

Full-Day View of Your Child

AngelSense goes far beyond locating your wandering child. It provides a comprehensive solution to ensure your child is safe and well cared-for.

AngelSense analytics learns your child’s daily schedule. You can understand the whereabouts of your child during the day at a glance using a clearly presented timeline view to make sure their routine is maintained. In addition, AngelSense uses patent-pending analytics to ensure that the GPS updates every 30 seconds during transits so that you can validate your child’s location. This could include the fact that the school bus is following the scheduled route and no unexpected stops are made.

GPS tracking

GPS trackers lack advanced power management and are limited to updates in constant frequency. To ensure that the battery lasts for a full day, they use a low update frequency,  e.g. every 30 minutes. As a result, such trackers do not visualize the routes nor can they detect and eliminate location errors.

Listen-In Capability

AngelSense includes a listen-in option to check on your child’s well-being and to pin-point their location during a search. The listen-in option is fully controlled by you via the app.

School Dashboard

Provides school staff access to the AngelSense App during school hours. For instance, they can access the timeline view to pinpoint the student’s exact location throughout the school day. This feature allows school to best support parents in the effort to keep their child safe at all times.

Customer Support by Parents of Children with Special Needs

AngelSense customer care is made up of special needs parents who are also expert users of the product. The customer care parents  are intimately aware of the challenges of other parents and have first-hand experience with the product.

      Hi Manuel,
We’ve had some tips for finding funding in Canada to help pay for the AngelSense system. They told us that you can apply for aid with funding via Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities and also apply for the disability tax credit. We are just starting out in servicing some parts of Canada and hope to be able to offer more information about funding options as we grow there!

My ONLY complaint is that the battery doesn’t last long enough. I have had it go dead in the middle of the day, which is not helpful. I charge it fully every night.

Hi there, I live in Alberta, Canada (Calgary to be exact) we’d like to use this for travel between Canada and the US. Will it work without having to change anything? Thank you for making such a wonderful product 🙂

    • Sidra @ AngelSense September 24, 2017 at 1:08 pm - Reply

      Hi Amanda,
Our devices have their own SIM cards and the device that works in Canada uses a Rogers SIM. At this time, we do not have the ability to offer roaming or international coverage but have been working on it for the near future so that others can have this ability to travel and use AngelSense.
      Thanks for the compliment!
      Kind regards,
      Sidra

How accurate is it for the speed of the vehicle the child is riding in and can it pick up speed of passing vehicles?

If I have two special needs children that I would like a device for each would I be paying two monthly fees or just one? I understand I’d have to pay for two devices but would it be a monthly fee for each device cause sadly that’s to muc for us for both.
