I recall only too clearly my shock at hearing the news of yet another wandering tragedy. This time a 5-year old boy with autism who wandered from his family’s New Year’s Eve party only to be found two days later in the Lehigh River in Pennsylvania. Once again, we are reminded that more needs to be done to keep children with special needs safe.

While autism may make life more difficult, it hasn’t stopped many from defying the odds, challenging misconceptions and living life boldly. These are the people we need to celebrate as they’re a powerful reminder of what’s possible. They teach us that no matter how tough things may be, we should never give up. Because if they can, others with autism can too!

California resident Deb Peralta didn’t set out to be an Autism activist parent. In fact, parenthood was thought to be off the table entirely until it suddenly wasn’t – Devin and Darius were a miraculous gift for Deb and her husband, Dean, changing their lives in ways they couldn’t possibly imagine.

What started off as a typical Saturday almost ended in tragedy for this Los Angeles special needs family. Last week, Cris and Paul Houghtaling were 20 minutes into their exercise routine at a local gym when they were informed by an employee that Julian, their non-verbal child with autism, was nowhere to be found.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives approved Kevin and Avonte’s Law (H.R. 4919) which aims to protect children with special needs from the dangers of wandering. While this marks a significant milestone for the special needs community, the bill still has a ways to go before becoming law.
