If your child’s school hasn’t been hit by the fidget spinner, don’t hold your breath. These hypnotic toys are popping up everywhere, and for good reason. They’re captivating and children love them. What’s not to love about a toy that not only becomes more entertaining with every spin, but also relieves stress, anxiety and improves concentration?

Many special needs kids are very talented, and have a lot to contribute to society. The sad reality, however, is that most people don’t know enough about these kids so they fail to see how unique they are. Instead of focusing on how special needs kids are different, it’s time to highlight their gifts and strengths.

It’s estimated that as many as 50 percent of those with autism are non-verbal. This can make the challenges of parenting seem that much more daunting. When faced with this dilemma many desperate parents go in search of tools or strategies which they hope will give their special child a voice.

Autism needs no introduction. It’s no longer a condition that elicits blank stares and empty looks. After all most of us know of someone, even if it’s just that child from TV, with autism.

April can be a trying month for people with autism. It’s a time when some of the biggest monuments “Light It Up Blue” and people are encouraged to walk, donate and just show up in support of autism. April is the time when people stop to raise awareness for a condition that, according to recent estimates, affects 1 in 68 children. And that’s just the problem.

In the autism community, one of the most fiercely debated topics is how to refer to people on the spectrum. While some prefer the term ‘people with autism’, others lean towards ‘autistic person’. Then there are those who remain indifferent, and prefer to take a tomato [tomayto]; tomato [tomahto] view of things. When a post in our Facebook group sparked fervent discussion, we realized this isn’t a simple matter of semantics. We felt it was important to get to the bottom of this because there’s no denying the power of words. More than simply conveying meaning, words convey sentiment and ultimately shape how people are perceived.

President Trump, we urgently need your help! We are very concerned about how we as a nation will continue to support kids with special needs, including proper education and health care.
